August 22, 2009Women's Equality Day News, Notes & Photos -
Dear Ann Arbor Branch members,
Thank you very much for supporting the Women's Equality Day in the evening of August 26. Among the 100 attendees, at least half of them were AAUW members. The 10 organizations that co-sponsored the event showed off the diversity in our community. The food they brought also reflected diversity. Each organization was presented with a copy of the Proclamation of the Ann Arbor Mayor John Hieftje. (Thanks to Dixie Cocagne for preparing the wording!) CLICK HERE TO READ COMPLETE MESSAGE

Women's Equality Day Celebration 2009 FlyerIn 1971 the U.S. Congress designated August 26th as Women's Equality Day. This date was selected to commemorate the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment to the Consitution, granting women the right to vote. This day also calls attention to women's continuting efforts to achieve full equality. This year AAUW of Michigan, ERAmerica, and a number of other women's organizations are sponsoring a Women's Equality Day event on Saturday, August 22nd in Livonia at the One Under Restaurant and Banquet Hall. Our speakers include Margaret O'Rourke Kelly, author of The Dora Stockman Story. Dora Stockman was the first woman to serve in the Michigan Legislature. Mary Kerwin, First VP of the Women Officials Network (WON), will talk about the importance of women running for office. One of our state senators has been invited to discuss the crucial topic of pay equity. Join us to honor our foremothers and to reaffirm our commitment to equity for all women and girls.
