AAUW National

What is AAUW?

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is a national organization that promotes equity for all women and girls, lifelong education, and positive societal change.  There are over 100,000 members, 1300 branches, and 550 college/university institution partners nationwide.  For over 125 years it has advocated for education and equity, supporting positive societal change, through scholarships, research, and lobbying efforts.

AAUW is the lead organization in publishing research on girls, particularly how gender affects self-esteem, career aspirations, educational experience, and interest in math and science.  The AAUW Educational Foundation is the world’s largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women.  Local branches, such as the Grosse Pointe Branch, raise thousands of dollars each year to support scholarships for local women.  The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund provides funds and support to women seeking judicial redress for gender discrimination.

In principle and practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership.  There shall be no barriers to full participation on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or class.

Strategic Process Update

AAUW’s Strategic Process Moves Forward

During the past 18 months, AAUW and the Educational Foundation have been engaged in an extensive strategic process to address shared challenges and opportunities. To provide members with detailed information about this process, the AAUW website now features an updated Strategic Process section, which includes

  • the proposed Bylaws amendments and restructuring proposals,

  • a summary of proposed changes in chart form,

  • a copy of the October 2006 Joint Boards’ Report,

  • Frequently Asked Questions and contact info, and

  • other helpful documents and material.

The site also includes a list of frequently asked questions, which will be updated regularly, and a link through which members can submit their own questions about the process.

Please use the website to research the proposed changes for yourself, and then—as we move toward convention—talk with other members about voting for the proposals as a way to reenergize and refocus AAUW.
