Wyandotte-Downriver

Year Established 1932

We strive to encourage college and university women to participate in the educational, civic and social concerns of our communities and to encourage the promotion and growth of AAUW.  We contribute to the community to foster local recognition of the AAUW, and cooperate in local, state and national networking opportunities.

Our Annual Used Book Sale is the primary method of support of the AAUW Educational Foundation.  The sale is held at Southland Mall in October.   A fund-raising activity (the method may vary) is held every other year to benefit our Local Scholarship Awards program, which generally raises funds for two or three awards of $1,000 yearly.

Proceeds from other projects (see below) raise funds earmarked for Branch projects and any other community activities that the Branch may elect to sponsor.  We also seek to network with area organizations in community projects.  Guests and interested members of the community are cordially invited to attend any regular monthly meeting or activity.

Happy 75th! The Wyandotte-Downriver Branch recently celebrated its 75th anniversary.  Pictured below are several past presidents who gathered to mark the occasion. At right is a scan of the newspaper article that appeared in the Wyandotte News-Herald on Dec. 7, 2007.

Number of Members We draw members from the southern Wayne County area, including Rockwood, Grosse Ile and Woodhaven in the south to Wyandotte, Allen Park, Ecorse and Taylor in the north.  Our current membership of 121 draws from at least 18 communities.  We also attract some members from farther afield (Dearborn, Detroit, Romulus).

The purpose of this Branch is to encourage college and university women to participate in the educational, civic and social concerns of our communities and to encourage the promotion and growth of AAUW, to contribute to the community, to foster local recognition of the AAUW and to cooperate in local, state and national networking opportunities.

Programs

Branch Projects

All members are expected to participate in the Annual Used Book Sale, which is our primary method of support of the AAUW Educational Foundation.  This is held at Southland Mall on the fourth weekend in October.  A donation is acceptable if a member is unable to participate for any reason.

A fund-raising activity (the method may vary) is held every other year to benefit our Local Scholarship Awards program, which generally raises funds for two or three awards of $1,000 yearly.

Periodically, there may be an informal drawing for the LAF (Legal Advocacy Fund).  We have also had success with a spring garage sale, with proceeds earmarked for Branch projects needing support over and above our Budget Allocations.  These and any other community activities that the Branch may elect to sponsor are supported on a voluntary basis. We also seek to network with area organizations in community projects.

Latest Branch News

Celebrating their 75th Anniversary in November and hosting the Spring Convention for AAUW of Michigan on May 3rd have been the major focus for this group.  However, they have been having fun raising funds for awarding local scholarships.  On June 17th  they have planned their third annual golf outing on Grosse Ile.  Last year, $1,000 of the $1,300 earned beyond their donation to the Susan B. Komen Cancer Foundation, was earmarked for a scholarship for a woman pursuing sports medicine, physical therapy, or a related field.  The winter fundraiser was a card party, with tickets sold for a total of 56 euchre and bridge seats which raised $800 in one night.  The hors d’oeuveres, beer and wine that are sold are very popular with the crowd and LAF is the recipient of the proceeds from a 50/50 raffle.  Winnings are usually generously donated back to AAUW!  A summertime “Dollars for Scholars” raffle, using Michigan Lotto numbers, has proved successful two times for them, rewarding their efforts with about $5,700 each time.  There are a lot of folks who purchase the tickets hoping to win the two big prizes of $500 each and the odds of winning are actually pretty good.  Their book sale takes place during October and 60% of the total proceeds are donated to EF.  Networking with an educator’s sorority resulted in teamwork to collect items and compile gift bags for the girls of the Vista Maria Center in Dearborn Heights at Christmas time.  In March they supported a local coalition participating in a program on Grosse Ile celebrating Women’s History Month.  The objective of the month-long project was to assist in funding the high school library‘s acquisition of updated material pertaining to women’s contributions to society and highlight contemporary role models within the community to the students. They hope to enlist the Grosse Ile committee’s help in presenting a similar program to less affluent school districts in the future.

Upcoming Events

  • We are are sponsoring our third annual golf outing for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, "Rally For The Cure,"  on June 17, 2008, in conjunction with the Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club.  The cost is $85 for the scramble.  Luncheon price only is $20.  For complete details of the outing contact Gloria connolli@wideopenwest.com or The Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club 1-734-676-1166 ask for Carol.  The outing is limited to 144 golfers.
