Branch Projects
Here are just a few of the ways we have supported Hillsdale
County communities over the years: sponsoring the Artrain twice, running a
gifted and talented program for local school children, offering Career Days for
female high school students, sponsoring and helping develop a yearly science and
math day for 6th through 8th grade girls, offering a community concert series,
holding a Family Arts Festival for the county, offering Women’s Weekend retreats
for county women, sponsoring diversity training for local teachers and citizens,
holding several Meet the Candidates Nights, and we were the first branch in
Michigan to offer a “Woman-To-Woman Dialogue”. (Any group wishing to view a
video of the Women-To-Women Dialogue can contact co-president
Nancy Watson).
The Branch has also sponsored 7 Hillsdale Home Tours to raise money for local
scholarships and the AAUW Educational Foundation. With those monies, along with
monies from other fundraisers, we have been able to endow two scholarships for
local women through the Hillsdale County Community Foundation. The Hattie Marie
Spiteri Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a graduate of Hillsdale High School
each year and the Lola B. Cook Scholarship is awarded to a woman who has been
out of school and is returning to get a degree. Both Hattie Marie and Lola were
Hillsdale AAUW members.

Latest Branch News
In 2008, the Hillsdale
Branch has had several interesting programs. A tour was arranged to the
local senior center and the group enjoyed a recital of dual pianos performed by
several retired Hillsdale College faculty members. The February meeting
from the Hillsdale County Art Works was cancelled due to bad weather, but that
program will be arranged for next year. The International Focus group has
been busy meeting with topics ranging from the Mayan Word, Childhood in the
Philippines during WWII and Islamic Art. One of the most popular
gatherings is the Breakfast Buddies which meets every first Saturday of the
month at a local restaurant.
