FlintYear Established 1919Number of Members 43The Flint Branch was established in 1919 when twenty-eight flint college-educated women formed a branch of the Western Association of Collegiate Alumnae. Throughout its history, the Flint Branch has actively supported regional, cultural, civic and educational programs and events. By its second year, the branch had doubled its membership. In 1922, the annual college scholarship of $200 was established for worthy women students. This fund was continued for four years. In 1924, the branch sponsored the first concert course for the Flint Public Schools, underwriting costs of $600. In 1925, the branch made its first contribution toward purchase costs of a clubhouse for the university women in Washington, D. C. Other contributions by the group in the early years were made to the University of Michigan Women’s League Building Fund and the establishment of the Flint Art Institute. By 1934, Flint Branch membership was 150.In 1934, the branch took a stand with the State AAUW division against the wording and the principal of the United States Civil Service Commission listing women “physically handicapped.” In 1941, the branch studied the issue of reapportionment and took an active role with the state AAUW in campaigning through petitions to put the issue on the state ballot in the general election. In 1946, the Flint Branch presented a radio series on the history and purposes of the AAUW on station WFDF, a now defunct cultural radio station. They also sponsored two events at the Flint Institute of Arts: An opening night tea for the exhibit of Carol Pierson’s Costume Dolls and an African Sculpture Exhibit. In 1948, the first used book sale was held. For many years, this was the primary fund raising event of the branch. By 1953, the sales were raising over $1,000 for association scholarships. Because of rising costs and diminishing returns, the book sale was discontinued. Current Officers
MeetingsProgramsBranch Projects In recent years, the Flint Branch is proud to present $1000 in merit scholarships to two local women each year. The women must hold a 3.5 or high cumulative average. They are hosted each May at our luncheon meeting. Many speak of their goals and aspirations and we are proud to know we are helping them achieve those goals.Study/Interest GroupsBranch ContactMembership Form We have many interesting speakers throughout our year. Last fall, they began the year by giving hats, gloves and mittens to Cooley Elementary School. At Christmas they sold candles and made up bags of personal hygiene items for the women in an adult foster care facility. Every meeting they hold a raffle. Two Book Sales are held each year, one in May and one in October. Programs have featured financial planning, the Chief of Police speaking on how women can protect themselves, a comparison of education by a Japanese college student, and a report from a former scholarship winner of her Peace Corp experiences.
