FentonYear Established 1954Number of Members 15The Fenton branch was chartered in 1954 with 14 charter members. Marie Bostick was the founding president and Helen Stockham was the founding vice president. Membership grew to 28 members in 1956.Since its founding, the Fenton branch has been involved in mission and community projects. 1957 marked the branch's first annual booksale. Current booksales are held in August in conjunction with Fenton's Art in the Park. Annual booksale revenues are designated for the AAUW Educational Foundation, the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund and local scholarships. Other fundraisers include puppet and fashion shows and the well known cheeseball sale. The Fenton branch has earned recognition for its contribution toward the building of the Education Center in Washington, D.C. The Association has recognized Fenton's contribution to Educational Foundation. Current Officers
Meetings The Fenton branch is a small group of women more interested in AAUW mission related projects than in monthly meetings. Meetings necessary to facilitate projects are usually held on the first Wednesday of the month.ProgramsBranch ProjectsThe Fenton Branch Scholarship Program began in 1990. Scholarships are awarded to women in the Fenton, Lake Fenton, Linden and Holly areas who attend Mott and Oakland Community Colleges, Flint U of M, and Baker College.The Fenton branch sponsors yearly projects for girls in coalition with local schools, Girl Scouts, and community organizations. This year's project deals with Financial Literacy and was introduced to senior girls in an Alternative Education program.Study/Interest GroupsBranch ContactMembership FormNewslettersLatest Branch NewsMaking cheese balls in November continues to be a popular project as a fundraiser, in addition to their August Book Sale. From their profits they give six local scholarships, four $600 scholarships to graduating high school seniors and two $500 awards to women returning to school. In addition they contribute to the Educational Foundation which has earned them honors in per capita giving. Programs have included visiting a book store, a session on financial literacy and a demonstration of Chinese cooking by one of their members. Last update May 3, 2008 |
