EF COUNTERPART MESSAGE        Carol Pyke, EF Director AAUW of Michigan

 MARCH 3, 2009

Last month all EF chairs should have received the Association report from me indicating the EF contributions from your branch for 2008.  Eighty percent of Michigan branches contributed a total of $80,784.29 to the Educational Foundation.  The branch contributing the most was Ann Arbor at $16,779.  Wow!  Congratulations to the Ann Arbor branch for a great job of fundraising!

Six branches contributed to the Leadership and Training program for a total of $580.  This money will be used for covering the costs of the National Conference for College Women Student Leaders. (NCCWSL)

Adding together the contributions to EF, Leadership and Training, Unrestricted Association, and LAF, Michigan branches contributed a total of $105,243.29 to AAUW support!  Please make a point of letting your members know that their support is very much appreciated and will be used to support women and girls in education and advocacy activities.

Twenty percent of the branches made no contributions to EF (unless they were submitted after Dec. 31, 2008 and did not get credited for 2008.)  Let's try to have one hundred percent of the branches contributing in 2009!

It is interesting to note that ninety-eight percent of all branches had members contributing to the Association for unrestricted support in the amount of $8015. This is probably in response to the note cards sent occasionally by the Association to all members.  It will be used for general Association operating expenses.

A full analysis of the contributions will be included in my annual report which will be distributed at the May state convention in Midland.

This has been a difficult year financially for many members due to the economic conditions in our communities, state and nation. Fund raisers have not been as profitable as in the past, and individuals are reluctant to donate fearing financial problems. Considering all the adversity, our membership should feel proud of the generous amounts contributed overall.

We are now fully into the 2009 year of giving, so use all your creative thinking to raise more dollars for EF and NCCWSL as well as LAF.  These programs are the heartbeat of AAUW supporting research, various grants, and legal advocacy.  These programs should be of the highest priority in your branch fundraising.  It is suggested, though not required, that every member try to contribute $25.00 to EF annually or have fund raisers for EF that equate to per member contribution of $25.00.  This is not always possible but any effort toward the goal would be great for the Educational Foundation.

Please continue to send me copies of your contribution reports throughout the year when you collect and send checks to the Association.  Also, be sure to explore the AAUW of Michigan website at aauwmi.org.  You will find this report on the website and much information about Michigan's AAUW branches.

I hope to see many of you at the state convention as this is a very critical time for AAUW as we move toward significant changes in our organization.  The convention will offer opportunities to learn more and ask questions as well as discuss and digest the potential changes.  Encourage your branch members to attend.

As always, feel free to contact me by phone or email any time.
